Synesthesia Painting

What if you could see the shape of a sound? I don’t mean imagine it. I mean truly see it, in color and form, the moment it hits your ear. For me, that’s just a regular Tuesday. I have synesthesia, and it paints my world in wild ways.

First, the musicians began to play. A violin note swirled like a cobalt ribbon. A percussive knock appeared as a sharp, amber triangle. My hands moved almost on their own. I grabbed blues and golds. Furthermore, I layered them on the canvas. The shapes guided my brush completely.

Where the fun begins: the Synesthesia!

Recently, I faced a thrilling challenge. The amazing Kirkos ensemble invited me to perform at The Complex Dublin. Their Depot Sessions became my stage. The plan was bold. Musicians would create spontaneous sounds. And then, I would paint the shapes I saw in real time. No script, no safety net. Just raw creation.

Next, the soundscape evolved. A cello’s drone poured out a deep, purple wave. What’s more, a flute’s trill became a shower of green dots. I added them to the painting, too. Equally important, I had to keep up. The music flowed without pause, and so did my paint. It was a beautiful, frantic dance.

The result honestly stunned me. I felt completely immersed in the moment. Moreover, the final piece feels alive. It captures a conversation between sound and sight. You can see the rhythm. You can almost hear the colors.
